Calling all green thumbs…It is that time of year again in South Florida. We all want to prune and plant to improve on our landscaping so that by spring everything is in full bloom. To assist you in your endeavor here are a few helpful hints:

Gardening:

1. Select a sunny, well drained area.
2. Churn the dirt with compost and slow release fertilizer before you plant.
3. For a “cutting” garden think easy maintenance…Long stemmed annuals and perennials work best.
4. When planting a “cutting” garden don’t worry about complementing colors or arranging them -- save that for your landscape garden.
5. When planting, add foliage/greens into the mix to add texture.
6. Not sure of the flowers or seeds you are selecting? Ask an employee at your local greenhouse or retail outlet for advice.
7. When grouping plants pay attention to sun exposure and watering requirements for easier maintenance.
8. Don’t over water -- we have a tendency to do so.
9. Fertilize once a month.
10. Keep an eye on insects- use a bug killer that is plant friendly when they appear.
11. Remove faded or dead blossoms

Cutting:

1. Remember -- the more often you cut the more often they’ll grow.
2. Cut flowers in bloom in the early morning when cool.
3. Snip stems at an angle using sharp shears.
4. If cutting in a large batch or batches bring a bucket of warm water along and place the ends of the cut stems into it immediately. This prevents them from sealing and will prolong their lifespan in the vase.
5. Clip stems another quarter of an inch and remove all leafy parts that fall below water level -- place in vase.

Caring for Flowers:

1. Add a packet of preservative or make homemade preservative using lemon-lime soda mixed equally with water and a drop of chlorine bleach.
2. Change water every other day.
3. Do not leave any leafy greens or buds below the water level.
4. Be sure to place flowers away from direct heat or drafts.

Symbolism of colors:
Red - love, respect, passion, courage
Pink - happiness, gentility, grace, admiration
Yellow - friendship, joy
White - innocence, purity, secrecy
Peach/Coral - enthusiasm, modesty, sweetness
Purple - faithfulness, hope
